"Go back with us to a time when jazz was Harlem's soul, and basketball was its heartbeat."
The original soundtrack to On the Shoulders of Giants offers one of the best collections of jazz sounds from a story about one of the greatest basketball teams you never heard of, the Harlem Rens.
This lively disc features music greats that swing from classic jazz to modern-day hip-hop, blending and merging their styles to create a unique mix of 23 tracks of original sounds inspired by the Big Bands of the ‘30s.
Big Band was the music that electrified Harlem’s smoky dance halls. Its rhythms underscored an American cultural rebirth that helped lay the foundation for sweeping social changes. With over 60 minutes of original music from Grammy Award winner Bill Cunliffe and his Big Band, the soundtrack also features hip hop king, Chuck D, and his tribute to Harlem with three special never before released songs. Included is a remake of the standard “Stompin’ at the Savoy” – with the legendary Herbie Hancock “stomping” at the piano, and vocals from the Black Eyes Peas’ will.i.am, and Montreal’s young jazz sensation, Nikki Yanofsky.
